Punjab Suspends Official After Body Shipped in Garbage Vehicle

In Phagwara, Punjab, a shocking incident occurred where an unclaimed body was transported from the civil hospital to its cremation site in a municipal garbage collection vehicle. This deeply concerning event came to light after a video circulated widely on social media, sparking widespread condemnation.
Prompted by the public outcry, the Phagwara municipal corporation launched an immediate inquiry into the matter. As a direct consequence, the state government has suspended Hitesh Kumar, a sanitary inspector with the Phagwara MC, with immediate effect. The director of local government issued the suspension order.
The Punjab State Human Rights Commission has also taken suo motu cognizance of the incident. The commission has formally requested a detailed report from the senior superintendent of police in Kapurthala and the commissioner of the Phagwara municipal corporation, setting a deadline for submission before its next hearing.
