A 50-year-old scientist and research guide at a central government institute in Pune has been arrested on charges related to the suicide of a 30-year-old PhD student. The student, pursuing a PhD in botany, was discovered deceased in her Chinchwad home on Saturday afternoon, having apparently died by suicide. A magisterial court ordered the guide's remand in police custody until April 15. A note recovered from the student's room indicated that the research guide had been subjecting her to mental harassment and inappropriate behavior. Based on this note and a complaint filed by the student's father, the Bhosari MIDC police arrested the scientist for offenses including abetment of suicide and outraging a woman's modesty. The father stated in his complaint that the accused had been misbehaving and mentally harassing his daughter since August of the previous year. The student had reportedly informed her parents about the situation, and they had approached both the institute and the guide. The guide had issued a written apology, assuring that the misconduct would cease. However, despite this, the student took her own life. Her parents became aware of her death when they could not get a response from her room. Investigations into the matter are currently in progress, with the note to be sent for handwriting analysis.
