Pune Air Base Walls Breached by Illegal Construction
25 Oct
Summary
- Structures totaling 20,000 sq ft were demolished near Pune's Air Force Station.
- Illegal construction diverted a natural stream and was near the station's boundary.
- Pune Municipal Corporation issued 24,000 notices for unauthorized structures since 2020.
Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) razed approximately 20,000 square feet of illegal structures in Lohegaon-Wagholi following a complaint from the defence department. These unauthorized constructions were situated adjacent to the Air Force Station's boundary wall and had illegally diverted a natural stream. Civic officials noted that a two-storey building was erected without necessary permissions, posing a risk due to its proximity to the Air Force station's bomb-dump range.
In a parallel action, PMC conducted a demolition drive in the Ganapati Chowk area of Vimannagar, addressing encroachments within designated front margin spaces. This proactive stance against illegal building is underscored by PMC data, which reveals that 24,000 notices have been issued under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act between 2020 and 2026. Earlier this month, around 21,000 sq ft of unauthorized construction was also demolished in the Nagar Road area, where land reserved for a playground had been occupied by a six-storey building.
