A wellbeing therapist has lost her complete £28,000 inheritance after falling victim to a property investment scam. Nancy Laats, 63, from Nottingham, was targeted by fraudsters who posed as representatives of the Unique Property Investment Group.
The company falsely claimed to be creating homes for vulnerable people and partnering with the YMCA in a government-backed scheme. Ms. Laats invested £28,000, believing in the firm's professional brochures and the promise of a 25 per cent monthly return. She received a few initial payments, fostering trust.
However, the Unique Property Investment Group soon announced it was entering administration. An administrator's report revealed that while investors had paid over £12.5 million, the company possessed only two properties valued at £315,000. The YMCA has since clarified it had no involvement with the firm and had not authorized the use of its name.
Ms. Laats described feeling shocked and later anxious, calling herself "stupid" and "pathetic" for being deceived. She believes she has lost all her inheritance and experiences severe emotional distress due to the scam.
