A 26-year-old prison officer, Megann Gibson, has been sentenced to 12 months in jail for misconduct after a relationship with inmate Ryan Horan. Working at Wealstun Prison near Wetherby, West Yorkshire, Gibson engaged in "extremely graphic" phone sex with Horan, a convicted gangster. The pair also exchanged explicit love letters, and Gibson expressed desires for marriage and children with him.
Gibson's involvement extended beyond Horan. She visited his home in Sheffield and sent over 900 WhatsApp messages to his mother. Her behaviour at the prison had previously raised suspicions, with over 100 intelligence reports filed within her first five months. These reports concerned potential contraband smuggling and "over-familiarity" with prisoners.
Despite suspicions of improper behaviour with other inmates, no findings were made against Gibson for those incidents. However, her relationship with Horan led to her conviction for misconduct in a public office. The judge emphasized that ignoring boundaries in such a position warrants immediate custody.
