21 Aug
Summary
- Nurse Kiera Burton was struck off for smuggling drugs.
- She was jailed for 20 months for her role in the conspiracy.
- The gang used sophisticated drones to deliver parcels.

Kiera Burton, a 35-year-old prison nurse, has been permanently struck off the nursing register following her conviction for drug smuggling. Burton was found to be part of a gang that illicitly supplied HMP Preston and HMP Lancaster Farms with prohibited items, including drugs and mobile phones.
Previously sentenced to 20 months imprisonment in March, Burton's involvement was described by a judge as being driven by infatuation and enjoyment of the "thrill" of the illicit activities. Her actions facilitated the regular conveyance of substances like cannabis and spice, along with phones and SIM cards, into the correctional facilities. Evidence uncovered during investigations included hollowed-out shoe soles and cash at her residence.
The conspiracy involved sophisticated methods, including the use of drones to drop packages into prison yards. In total, 14 individuals were imprisoned for their roles. The Nursing and Midwifery Council deemed Burton's conduct a significant departure from professional standards, fundamentally incompatible with her continued registration.
