An inquiry has been launched by the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority (TNSLSA) into the escape of 17 prisoners. The Theni district wing of TNSLSA has been directed to investigate allegations that torture by prison authorities led to the escape.
Justice S M Subramaniam, TNSLSA chairman, instructed the Theni district legal services authority to visit the prison. The inquiry will focus on claims of prisoners receiving insufficient food and drinking water, and facing other forms of mistreatment prior to their escape.
Furthermore, the district authorities are tasked with ascertaining whether the 17 prisoners were subjected to threats, coercion, or prevented from lodging complaints regarding the alleged torture. Similar inquiries have been ordered in Cuddalore, Madurai, Salem, and Tirunelveli central prisons concerning the prisoners currently housed there. Reports are due by November 16.
