Detective Faked Cancer, Abuse Claims to Control Mistress

A former Lancashire Constabulary detective, Michael Harvey, 65, has been jailed for two and a half years for controlling and coercive behaviour. Harvey, who worked in the Major Incident Team and Sexual Offender's Unit, fabricated a cancer scare and claims of childhood abuse to manipulate his mistress and prevent her from leaving him. He also repeatedly threatened suicide whenever the relationship faltered.

Harvey met the woman by chance and used police databases to find her details. He falsely claimed to be separated from his wife and later invented serious personal issues to elicit sympathy and control her. His victim described him as a 'predatory' officer who disgraced the force and abused his power.

The court heard Harvey’s manipulation included exaggerating mental health problems and feigning illness, leading him to move into her home rent-free under false pretences. His actions caused his victim significant psychological harm and distress. He was cleared of a rape charge but admitted to controlling behaviour and misusing police systems. A restraining order was also imposed.
