Summary

- He was convicted in 2023 on charges including witness tampering.
- Michel plans to appeal his conviction from within prison.

Fugees rapper Pras Michel has begun serving a 14-year prison sentence after reporting to the Federal Correctional Institution in Safford, Arizona, on April 30, 2026. Michel, 53, was convicted in 2023 on multiple charges. These include conspiracy, concealment of material facts, making false entries in records, witness tampering, and serving as an unregistered agent of a foreign power.
His conviction stems from a 2019 indictment accusing him of illegally transferring funds into former President Barack Obama's 2012 re-election campaign. Prosecutors alleged that Malaysian businessman Jho Low transferred $21.6 million to Michel's accounts in 2012 to funnel money into the U.S. presidential election, with Michel subsequently paying approximately $865,000 to donors.
Michel's spokesperson, Erica Dumas, confirmed his surrender and stated that he will vigorously contest the conviction on appeal. Dumas expressed belief that the legal process will reveal violations of Michel's rights and that the truth was obscured. She indicated that Michel intends to "fight it on the inside."
Previously, a judge ordered Michel to begin his sentence in January 2026, with subsequent delays until the April 30 surrender date. In unrelated news, Michel dropped a lawsuit against Fugees bandmate Lauryn Hill in March 2026, which he had filed in October 2024 over issues related to the Fugees' 2023 tour and a canceled 2024 tour.
