Vindicated: Court Rules Arrest Was Unlawful Race Discrimination
19 Jun
Summary
- Teen arrested for mother's attempted murder on racial grounds.
- Court found Metropolitan Police's arrest unlawful and discriminatory.
- Arrest had a profound impact, causing him to drop out of school.

A court has ruled that the Metropolitan Police unlawfully arrested Daryl McLune, then 16, on attempted murder charges due to his race. The Central London County Court jury found the arrest on July 25, 2021, to be in breach of his human rights.
McLune, now 21, stated he feels vindicated after a long wait, hoping this confirmation will help him recover from the incident. His lawyers highlighted that instead of receiving support as a child in crisis, he was handcuffed and treated as a suspect because of his race.
The arrest occurred tragically as his mother was fighting for her life. Police took forensic samples from his hands, which were never processed. This unlawful arrest led to assault, battery, false imprisonment, race discrimination, and a breach of human rights.
The Metropolitan Police acknowledged the distressing nature of the arrest and committed to addressing all forms of discrimination. A judge is expected to determine the damages to be paid to McLune.
