Violence against police officers must not be normalized or dismissed, according to a senior officer, following a spate of assaults over a recent weekend.
South Yorkshire Police reported that six officers were attacked while on duty. These incidents included an officer being put in a choke hold and scratched, another kicked in the head, and one suffering a concussion and suspected ligament damage after responding to a mental health crisis. Ambulance staff were also assaulted during this incident.
Superintendent Pete Spratt highlighted the dedication of the officers, many of whom returned to work despite their injuries. He stressed that while officers are resilient, these attacks have significant physical and psychological impacts on individuals and their families, stating that such violence is unacceptable.
