UP Police SHO's Phone 'Scanner' Ruse Exposed
2 Jan
Summary
- Police SHO used a mobile phone as a fake scanner.
- The fake scanner was used to pressure residents for identity.
- An investigation is underway into the officer's conduct.

An SHO in Kaushambi, Ghaziabad, employed an unusual tactic during a verification drive at the Bhowapur slum cluster on December 23. The officer allegedly used a mobile phone, pretending it was a scanner, to pressure residents into revealing their nationality, claiming it could detect if they were illegal immigrants.
Videos circulating on social media show the SHO placing the phone on individuals' backs, asserting it identified them as being from Bangladesh. Residents maintained they were from Bihar. The SHO later defended his method, stating it was intended to encourage truthful identity disclosure without causing harm.
Senior police officials confirmed a foot march occurred around that time but denied any official authorization for such a verification technique. The Commissioner of Police has initiated an inquiry into the incident based on the video evidence.
