24 Mar
Summary
- Parents form support group for unsolved child gun violence cases.
- Families urge witnesses to come forward to solve cold cases.
- Allegheny County has 69 unsolved homicides from past five years.

Parents in the Pittsburgh area have united to form "Families for Justice," a vital support and advocacy group for those whose children have fallen victim to gun violence with unsolved cases. These families find solace and strength in each other as they navigate immense grief and the ongoing torment of knowing their children's killers remain free.
The group actively engages with detectives and district attorneys' offices, striving to keep their cases from going cold. A central plea from members is directed at witnesses, who they believe hold the key to justice. Cathy Welsh, a member, states that "probably 80 percent of these cases could be solved if witnesses would come forward." The frustration is palpable, as many suspect investigators know the perpetrators but lack sufficient evidence for arrests.
Rick Lewis, whose son Jason was fatally shot six years ago, shared his anguish over the silence of witnesses. "How could their consciousness allow them to live with this," he questioned. While technology aids investigations, witness testimony remains crucial, especially when modern tools are unavailable. Allegheny County faces a significant challenge, with 69 out of 265 homicides in the past five years remaining unsolved, a statistic echoed by Assistant Superintendent Vic Joseph, who called the situation "very frustrating" for both law enforcement and the grieving families.
"Families for Justice" provides a crucial space for mutual support, as members understand the unique pain of losing a child to such violence. Barbie Samson highlighted this need, stating, "You don't have other people who understand what it's like to lose a child or a loved one to gun violence." Their shared journey of grief, though unending, is made more bearable by their collective fight for justice and their reliance on one another to face each challenging day.
