Pitcher Ortiz Claims He Was Duped in Gambling Scheme
12 Feb
Summary
- Luis Ortiz's lawyer says he was a victim of teammate Emmanuel Clase's scheme.
- Clase allegedly rigged over 250 pitches, while Ortiz is accused of two.
- Ortiz seeks a separate trial, citing potential conflicts with Clase's defense.
A legal maneuver by Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz aims to sever his case from teammate Emmanuel Clase, who faces charges in a pitch-rigging scheme benefiting gamblers. Ortiz's attorney argues that his client was a victim of Clase's operation, not a willing participant. Prosecutors suggest Clase may have rigged over 250 pitches, a stark contrast to the two pitches Ortiz is accused of rigging.
Attorneys for Ortiz also highlighted potential conflicts of interest, as Clase's defense team interviewed witnesses who may testify differently than initially claimed. This situation could allow Ortiz's defense to act as a "second prosecutor" if their cases are separated. The scheme, which allegedly involved determining prop bet outcomes, netted gamblers approximately $460,000.
Clase's alleged involvement began in May 2025, with Ortiz joining in June 2025. Both pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges, with their trial tentatively scheduled for May 4. However, Ortiz's camp is requesting more preparation time, while Clase seeks a swift resolution. Both pitchers remain on non-disciplinary paid leave from Major League Baseball.
