A man is in custody following a disturbing incident at a Phoenix bus stop that escalated to a sexual assault. On August 1st, at approximately 4:25 a.m., Kenneth Smith allegedly approached a couple near McDowell Road and 28th Street, demanding money.
After taking the woman's $1, Smith forced her to a nearby parking lot and sexually assaulted her at gunpoint. When her boyfriend announced he had called 911, Smith fled. Police later obtained surveillance footage, including from a Circle K where Smith used his loyalty number, leading to his identification.
Smith was arrested without incident at his apartment on August 8th. He denied involvement but faces charges including sexual assault, armed robbery, and kidnapping, with a $500,000 cash-only bond.
