On November 4, 2022, 26-year-old pharmacy student Ariel Spillner was allegedly shot and killed by her friend Jamica Mills, 32, in Milwaukee. According to a criminal complaint, the two women were smoking marijuana together when they both became paranoid, leading Mills to believe Spillner would attack her with scissors. Mills then retrieved a gun and shot Spillner, claiming the incident was accidental.
After the shooting, Mills also shot herself in the stomach before being found conscious but wounded inside her home. Spillner was pronounced dead at the scene. Mills is now facing charges of first-degree reckless homicide and remains in custody with a $150,000 bond.
Spillner's family has been left devastated by the tragedy, describing her as an ambitious and kind-hearted student "with the most infectious laugh." They have expressed shock and confusion over the incident, saying they "don't know anyone who would want to hurt Ariel in any way." The family opposes the possibility of Mills receiving a plea deal and hopes Spillner "gets the justice she deserves."
