Pharmacy Staff Face Escalating Abuse: Threats, Violence Surge
26 Mar
Summary
- Over half of pharmacies reported verbal abuse in six months.
- Staff endure threats, racist abuse, and physical violence.
- Pharmacy owners call for stronger government protections.

Pharmacy teams are confronting escalating abuse from patients, with a recent surge in racist incidents, death threats, and physical violence reported.
A survey by Community Pharmacy England found that over half of the 3,000+ participating pharmacies experienced verbal abuse within the past six months. Nearly three-quarters of these incidents occur weekly, and one-fifth face such abuse daily.
Staff have reported being subjected to punches, spitting, strangulation, and threats with weapons. Incidents of racist, misogynistic, and homophobic abuse are also prevalent, causing significant anxiety among workers.
These abuses are often triggered by prescription delays, medicine shortages, or NHS service rules beyond pharmacy control. Pharmacy owners recount bricks being thrown through windows and staff being spat on after refusing to provide medication without a prescription.
Pharmacy owners argue that staff lack the same protections as other NHS workers, with police response times diminishing for vandalism and threats. They are calling for stricter government action and zero tolerance for any form of abuse against community pharmacy staff.
