Peoria Coach Accused of Misconduct
12 Jul
Summary
- Coach Deardoff investigated for alleged inappropriate behavior with female students.
- Mandatory reporting laws require staff to report suspicions of abuse.
- District faces broader scrutiny amid multiple misconduct allegations.

In August 2025, a police investigation was launched into alleged misconduct by Sunrise Mountain High School baseball coach Michael Deardoff concerning female students. This occurred as the Peoria Unified School District faced broader scrutiny. The investigation began after district compliance coordinator James Nelson made a mandatory report regarding suspected sexual misconduct during the 2022-23 school year, a legal obligation for school staff in Arizona.
Evidence suggests higher district officials were aware of prior concerns. HR officer Talia Visintainer reportedly learned from coach Braden Taylor about potential "dirt" Deardoff held regarding inappropriate behavior with female students. Taylor also told police he had previously reported Deardoff's alleged inappropriate actions, including touching a student and suggesting a dangerous car race with a lunch penalty.
Further allegations from a parent claim Deardoff suggested a similar race with their daughter. Taylor stated Deardoff's conduct was known within the baseball community but unaddressed due to fear of reprisal. Deardoff was placed on administrative leave during the investigation, which was reported to law enforcement and the Arizona Department of Education.
The district's issues extend beyond Deardoff. Centennial High School faced scrutiny over a relationship between teachers Haley Beck and Angela Burlaka and a student. Previous incidents include the 2024 arrest of basketball coach Patrick Battillo for soliciting sexual videos, and allegations of sexual violence and hazing at Liberty High School in 2025.
Changes in district leadership also occurred. In May 2026, Talia Visintainer became interim superintendent, replacing Ryan LaDoucer, who claimed he was pressured to resign. Superintendent K.C. Somers, who denied LaDoucer's claims, resigned in February 2026 to lead a district in Colorado. Visintainer now holds the superintendent position.
