Pentagon Data Breach Exposes Military SSNs

The Pentagon's Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) experienced a major data breach, compromising sensitive personal information of military personnel. Unauthorized users gained access to a vulnerable server last October, and the issue was only discovered and addressed in July. This breach exposed Social Security numbers and, in some cases, occupational specialties of potentially up to four million Department of Defense personnel.

National security experts express concerns that the exposed data, which was not encrypted, could be a valuable asset for foreign intelligence services or cybercriminals. The combination of Social Security numbers with other personal details could enable detailed profiling or targeted exploitation of service members. The DMDC is a central hub for information on military entitlements, benefits, and medical readiness.

While the Pentagon currently indicates no misuse of the breached data, they are enhancing the cybersecurity of the DMDC system. Affected individuals are being offered one year of credit monitoring services. This incident underscores ongoing warnings to troops about their digital security amid international tensions and competition.
