On April 7, 2026, an incident unfolded at Pauls Valley High School when 18-year-old Charles Olkonen heard gunshots and saw former schoolmate Victor Hawkins brandishing a firearm. Principal Kirk "Coach" Moore heroically tackled Hawkins as Olkonen fled the building, hearing five more gunshots. Moore survived a gunshot wound to his right leg, an act for which he has received national praise.
During a preliminary hearing on July 23, 2026, investigators presented details of Hawkins' alleged intent. Agent Meric Mussett testified that Hawkins admitted to being obsessed with mass shooting videos and contemplating suicide. Hawkins also revealed he sent messages detailing his plan to shoot up the school, showing photos of guns taken from his father's closet.
Hawkins is currently facing amended felony charges, including firearm possession on school property and firearm pointing with intent to threaten. He reportedly told investigators he fired the first shot to "intimidate" and "make them feel fear." Investigators recovered two firearms and shell casings from the scene. Hawkins, who has autism, graduated from the school in 2025 and faces up to life in prison.
