Patna HC Gets 9 New Judges: Justice Boost!
27 Feb
Summary
- Nine advocates were recommended for Patna High Court judgeship.
- Elevations aim to tackle a backlog of 2.12 lakh cases.
- Court's strength will rise to 46 against 53 sanctioned posts.

The Supreme Court's three-judge collegium has recommended the elevation of nine advocates to the Patna High Court bench. This significant development is anticipated to bring relief to a large number of litigants in Bihar who have been facing long delays in justice, with some cases pending for nearly two decades.
The elevation will bolster the Patna High Court's judicial strength to 46, a notable increase from its current capacity, against a sanctioned strength of 53. This expansion is crucial given the court's current pendency of approximately 2.12 lakh cases. Legal experts note that the advocates recommended possess substantial experience in service, administrative, and criminal laws, areas that constitute about 80% of the pending caseload.
This decision has been welcomed by legal fraternity members, including the Advocate General and the Chairman of the Bihar State Bar Council. The upcoming period after the Holi vacation is viewed as a potential turning point for speedy case disposal. Notably, the Patna High Court is poised to set a new record when these nine advocates take their oath as judges on the same day, a feat not seen since the early 1990s.
