Officials in Patiala arrested two people, a man and a woman, on Sunday for allegedly conducting illegal prenatal sex determination tests. The arrests followed a complaint lodged by Dr. Lavkesh Kumar, Senior Medical Officer-in-Charge of the Community Health Centre in Model Town.
A case has been registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, and the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act.
The accused have been identified as Jarnail Singh and Meena Rani. Civil Surgeon Dr. Kushaldeep Kaur Gill stated that the action was based on credible information regarding illegal activities.
A special team, acting under the PCPNDT Act, conducted a decoy operation and subsequently raided a location near a sweet shop. They seized a portable ultrasound machine, an MTP kit, three mobile phones, and a car that was allegedly used as a mobile center for these unlawful tests.
Meena Rani has a prior record; she was previously apprehended in a similar case in 2024 and subsequently dismissed from her role as an Auxiliary Nursing Midwife. The health department reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against such violations.
