A Brown University sophomore, Zoe Weissman, found herself reliving the trauma of the 2018 Parkland school shooting after a gunman opened fire on the Providence campus. Weissman, who survived the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre, described her immediate reaction as anger and shock.
She highlighted the disturbing reality of individuals surviving multiple school shootings, referencing students who endured similar events in Oxford, Michigan, and then at Michigan State University. Weissman emphasized that this is not an isolated phenomenon and that inaction from lawmakers is directly contributing to the continued threat.
Authorities reported that at least two people were killed and eight others injured during the shooting in the Barus & Holley building. While initially a suspect was thought to be in custody, police confirmed the search was ongoing. Mayor Brett Smiley urged residents to remain indoors during the shelter-in-place order, vowing to deploy all available resources to apprehend the suspect.
