Senior Fights Parking Firm, Wins £289 Payout

In a significant victory for motorists, 76-year-old John Waters has successfully defended himself against a private parking firm, ultimately winning £289.50 in compensation. The dispute began in December 2023 when Civil Enforcement issued a £100 fine for an alleged parking infraction at the Foreman Centre Car Park in Headcorn, Kent.

Waters had paid 90p for an hour's parking and correctly keyed in his registration, but the ticket printed only the last four digits. Despite providing proof of payment and appealing, the company rejected his evidence and pursued him for escalating penalties, eventually demanding £277.

Undeterred by demands from debt collectors and the prolonged nature of the battle, Waters fought the claim on principle. He counterclaimed for the intimidation and anxiety caused over two and a half years. In court, Deputy District Judge Chan dismissed the company's claim and upheld Waters' counterclaim.

The judge ordered Civil Enforcement to pay Waters £289.50, covering his counterclaim, court expenses, and parking fees at court. Waters highlighted that many are intimidated into paying unwarranted fines and advised others to keep all evidence to defend themselves.
