15 Jul
Summary
- Parents pleaded guilty to abandonment and child abuse charges.
- Infant died from acute fentanyl and methamphetamine toxicity.
- Two other children in the home also tested positive for drugs.

Monique Sanchez, 35, and Thomas Soto, 37, have pleaded guilty to felony charges stemming from the death of their infant daughter. The child, who was only one year old, died in 2026 from acute fentanyl and methamphetamine toxicity.
Their guilty pleas include charges of abandonment of a child resulting in death and child abuse. Both parents face a maximum of 15 years in prison as part of their plea agreements. Tragically, two other children in the household also tested positive for fentanyl and methamphetamine.
This case has drawn attention from District Attorney Sam Bregman, who emphasized the critical responsibility of parents and caregivers to ensure child safety, particularly in light of ongoing drug crises. In a separate, unrelated case, another Albuquerque woman is scheduled for trial in August 2026 for charges related to her infant son's death from fentanyl withdrawal.
