- The blaze tragically claimed 12 lives in January 2025.

Jonathan Rinderknecht's trial begins this Monday, where he will face charges for allegedly starting the devastating Palisades Fire in January 2025. This catastrophic blaze claimed 12 lives and destroyed thousands of homes across Los Angeles and Malibu.
Federal prosecutors assert that Rinderknecht, an Uber driver, intentionally set the fire in the affluent Pacific Palisades as an act of retribution against the wealthy. Evidence presented includes Rinderknecht's internet search history, which reportedly contained queries about "let's take down all the billionaires" and searches for "Free Luigi Mangione."
According to court documents, numerous Uber passengers described Rinderknecht as angry and ranting about capitalism and vigilantism on New Year's Eve 2024 and January 1, 2025. Rinderknecht, who called emergency services himself, was arrested in Florida in October.
Conversely, Rinderknecht's defense attorney argues that fireworks, not Rinderknecht, caused the fire. He contends his client acted as a "Good Samaritan" and that the prosecution is attempting to scapegoat Rinderknecht to cover up the firefighters' failure to contain the initial blaze.
