25 Jun
Summary
- New clinics offer child-friendly medicolegal services.
- Laws updated to specifically address child sexual abuse.
- Child victims now receive psychosocial support and safe environments.

Pakistan has initiated a significant shift in its criminal justice system by establishing pilot Child-Friendly Medicolegal Clinics. These clinics, inaugurated last week, are designed to cater to child victims with a more compassionate and age-appropriate approach, moving away from past practices that treated children as miniature adults. The new facilities utilize toys and figure drawings to help children express their experiences, with staff trained to create a comforting atmosphere.
Legal reforms have also been implemented to better protect children. The Pakistan Penal Code was amended to include specific sections addressing child sexual abuse, and the Anti-Rape Act of 2021 further enhanced protections by detailing procedures and survivor rights. As of 2025, medical examinations must occur within 24 hours, and bail for accused individuals is restricted, with child victim cases potentially tried in juvenile courts.
These clinics integrate psychosocial support, connecting children to shelters and ensuring follow-up care through case workers. Plans are underway for safe rooms where children can stay overnight with a caregiver. The initiative also addresses age assessment for minors in custody and provides crucial medical interventions like emergency contraception and post-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention.
