Body camera footage has surfaced showing the arrest of Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Police confronted Mangione at an Altoona, Pennsylvania, McDonald's, recognizing him immediately as the individual sought in Thompson's death. During the apprehension, officers discovered a gun, a magazine, and a silencer concealed within Mangione's backpack.
Thompson was fatally shot on December 4, 2024, in Manhattan as he was en route to a UnitedHealthcare investor conference. Security footage from the incident depicted Mangione approaching Thompson from behind and firing the weapon. Mangione was arrested five days later at the McDonald's after his image was circulated by authorities.
During his arrest, Mangione provided a false name and used fake identification at a hostel. Officers also found a journal with handwritten notes, a gun, a silencer hidden in underwear, and a checklist indicating plans for an intel check-in and the acquisition of a survival kit. In August, Mangione pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges, admitting he traveled to New York with the intention of shooting Thompson.
Mangione stated his motive stemmed from his experiences with the healthcare system following a back injury. Prosecutors maintain he had no prior connection to UnitedHealthcare. His state trial for second-degree murder, scheduled for September, was postponed pending a decision on a double jeopardy motion filed by his defense.
