Summary
- DNA analysis identified a missing Oregon family from remains in a car.
- The family vanished in December 1958 while seeking Christmas greenery.
- A diver discovered the car wreckage in the Columbia River in 2024.

After 68 years, DNA analysis has finally identified a missing Oregon family whose remains were discovered in a car submerged in the Columbia River. Kenneth and Barbara Martin, along with their daughter Barbie, have been positively identified by the state medical examiner's office. The family vanished in December 1958 while on a trip to gather Christmas greenery, leaving behind two children whose bodies were found months later.
The Ford station wagon, believed to be the family's, was located in 2024 by diver Archer Mayo after years of searching. Authorities recovered parts of the heavily sediment-encased vehicle. In 2025, human remains were found within the wreckage and subsequently turned over for forensic analysis.
Advanced DNA techniques, including analysis of a bone sample, were employed by a specialized lab. Comparisons with a living relative enabled the identification of Kenneth Martin. Unfortunately, the skeletal remains of Barbara and Barbie Martin were too degraded for full analysis, though they are presumed to be the other individuals identified.
The sheriff's office concluded its investigation, finding no evidence of foul play. The discovery brings closure to a case that was a national news story in the late 1950s, fueled by speculation and a reward for information about the family's whereabouts.
