18 Apr
Summary
- Suspect arrested near OpenAI HQ with incendiary devices.
- Attack comes amid growing global discontent with AI.
- Manifesto condemned AI and called for CEO killings.

A Molotov cocktail was thrown at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's San Francisco residence in the early hours of April 10. The alleged assailant, identified as 20-year-old Daniel Moreno-Gama, was apprehended less than two hours later near OpenAI's headquarters. Authorities found him with kerosene, a lighter, and a manifesto condemning artificial intelligence and threatening tech CEOs.
Federal and state authorities have charged Moreno-Gama with serious offenses, including attempted arson and attempted murder. His parents have stated that their son had recently experienced a mental health crisis. Moreno-Gama, who has not yet entered a plea, faces potential life imprisonment if convicted. The attack underscores a period of increasing global opposition to AI technologies.
Moreno-Gama reportedly traveled from his home in suburban Houston, Texas, to San Francisco for the attack. His manifesto contained sections titled "Your Last Warning" and described the "impending destruction" posed by AI. Federal authorities have characterized the incident as an escalation of violence against the tech industry.
Moreno-Gama's public defender has argued that the charges are excessive, attributing the attack to a mental health crisis rather than a deliberate act of harm. The defender suggested the case is overcharged and exploits the young man's vulnerability due to the high-profile nature of the victims. Moreno-Gama's arraignment is scheduled for May 5.
