Youth Gets Life Sentence for Raping Tribal Girls

In Udhagamandalam, a youth has received a life sentence until death for the rape of tribal girl students. The Ooty mahila court delivered the verdict on Friday against Umeshwaran, 27, who operated a petty shop.
Umeshwaran had befriended five Class X and Class VIII tribal students who visited his shop. On separate occasions, he took them to his residence, raping two and sexually harassing three others, falsely promising marriage. Some local residents alerted child welfare officials, who then filed a complaint.
In May 2025, the Coonoor all-women police registered a case and arrested Umeshwaran, a former Home Guard and anti-poaching watcher. Following the trial at the Ooty mahila court, Judge M Senthil Kumar imposed the sentence. Additionally, the court mandated that the state government pay Rs 2 lakhs in compensation to each of the sexual assault victims.
