Elizabeth Siders, 34, has pleaded not guilty to charges of child endangerment and neglect concerning her 16 children. Authorities found the children, ranging from 17 months to 18 years old, in "deplorable conditions" within their Hamden, Ohio home.
The children, who had allegedly been confined to a single 12ft-by-12ft room for significant periods, appeared "almost feral." Many had not attended school, and some exhibited severe developmental delays, including an inability to speak. Siders' defense attorney argued for competency concerns, citing her history of nearly continuous pregnancy since age 15 without adequate healthcare.
During her court appearance on Wednesday, Siders' bond was increased from $250,000 to $550,000, as the judge deemed her a flight risk. She and her husband, Gary Siders Jr., also face separate indictments for sexual battery and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, involving another relative. Gary Siders Jr. previously pleaded not guilty.
A competency evaluation for Elizabeth Siders is pending, which will influence the legal proceedings. The defense hopes this evaluation will clarify her mental state and ability to understand the charges. There is also speculation that Siders may be pregnant again, although her attorney has declined to comment.
