Rodney L. Hinton was convicted on Friday of murder and other charges. The verdict came after a jury deliberated on the case, which began with days of testimony. Hinton is slated for sentencing on November 16.
The fatal incident occurred in May 2025. Just hours before striking Special Deputy Larry Henderson with his vehicle, Hinton had been at a police station viewing body camera footage. This video documented the shooting death of his 18-year-old son, Ryan Hinton, by a Cincinnati police officer.
Authorities stated that Ryan Hinton was a passenger in a reportedly stolen vehicle. When officers approached, some individuals fled. Police pursued Ryan Hinton and another person, asserting Ryan Hinton was armed. The body camera footage showed an officer firing at least four shots at Ryan Hinton as he appeared to run away, with officers shouting he had a gun.
During the trial, the defense argued Hinton struggled with mental health and was not of sound mind, seeking an insanity defense. Prosecutors countered that Hinton deliberately targeted Deputy Henderson, accelerating his vehicle to over 43 mph and intentionally steering into the deputy. Evidence presented included the vehicle's rapid acceleration and full throttle usage.
Henderson, who had retired from the sheriff's office five months prior, was working as a special deputy directing traffic. His wife testified emotionally about their last moments together, recalling his declaration of love before he left for work.
