Body Cam Shows Officer's Violent Assault on Student

Officer Marc Laue exhibited excessive force against a 15-year-old student, Jeremiah Johnson, at Judson High School in Converse, Texas, in November 2023. Body camera footage revealed Laue repeatedly striking and punching Johnson while he was handcuffed and seated. This incident occurred despite state laws aiming to keep officers out of routine student discipline, highlighting a broader concern about law enforcement's role in schools following increased funding after the Uvalde tragedy.

Jeremiah, who has a learning disability, was confronted after being accused of pushing an assistant principal. Officer Laue, a former Army veteran, expressed he was 'riled up' but could not explain why. His colleague repeatedly signaled him to stop. A teacher intervened, attempting to de-escalate the situation. Officer Laue later resigned and stated he wished it had not been an 'ugly day.'

Jeremiah faced charges and probation, impacting his education. He now works as a dishwasher and expresses a visceral reaction to police. Officer Laue, who was reprimanded and ordered to anger management, now works as an EMT, finding it a more 'feel-good profession.' The school district stated it takes student safety seriously and is reviewing its practices.
