In the early morning hours of October 28, a routine traffic stop led Officer Jack Rooney to an unexpected emergency: assisting in the home birth of a baby boy. Tatiana Topala began experiencing intense contractions at her Wilmington, Massachusetts, home, realizing she would not make it to the hospital in time.
Wilmington Police dispatchers Jared Winston and Joseph Leverone provided calm, expert guidance over the phone as Topala's labor progressed rapidly. Officer Rooney arrived shortly after, and with the support of Officer Kyle Collins, successfully helped Topala deliver her son, Oliver, in the bathroom of their home.
Wilmington Fire and Action Ambulance Services responded to the scene and transported both mother and newborn to a nearby hospital for necessary medical evaluations. The Wilmington Police Department commended the teamwork and professionalism displayed by all involved, including their public safety partners.
Approximately a week later, on November 5, the Topala family, including baby Oliver, reunited with Officer Rooney, Officer Collins, and members of the fire and ambulance services. The family expressed profound gratitude for the officers' composure and assistance, with the mother noting how their presence made her feel safer during the intense delivery.
