A severe fireworks accident on Tuesday at General Douglas MacArthur Park on Staten Island resulted in critical injuries to a 10-year-old girl and the arrest of a New York City Parks employee. The child reportedly found a powerful M-80 firework inside a park bathroom.
Investigators allege that 24-year-old Parks employee Joshua Moe, who was on duty, provided the girl with a lighter after she had been refused by other adults. The firework subsequently exploded in her hand, causing the loss of several fingers.
Moe was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment. He was arraigned on Wednesday and subsequently released under supervision. The firework is similar to those banned in New York City parks.
The NYC Parks department's disciplinary unit is conducting its own investigation into the matter. Authorities are also working to determine the origin of the firework and how it came to be inside the park.
