Nurses Referred in Nottingham Attacks Inquiry
21 May
Summary
- Three nurses referred to regulatory body in Nottingham attacks inquiry.
- Valdo Calocane killed three people and injured others in June 2023.
- Trust admits failing to exhaust all care options for Calocane.

A public inquiry into the Nottingham attacks has heard that three nurses have been referred to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The referred nurses were involved in the care of Valdo Calocane, who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and fatally attacked three individuals on June 13, 2023. Calocane also injured several others during the incidents.
The Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, which managed Calocane's care between 2020 and 2022, is currently presenting evidence at the inquiry. The trust's chief nurse confirmed the referrals to the NMC, noting regular consultations with the council.
During the inquiry, the trust's chief nurse acknowledged that while preventing the attacks might have been difficult, the trust failed to exhaust all available care options. She suggested that different actions taken at various points during Calocane's care by the trust and others could have potentially altered the outcome of the tragic events.
The inquiry has previously heard about systemic problems in risk assessment and discharge procedures preceding the attacks. A doctor involved in Calocane's care had also self-referred to the General Medical Council (GMC), while a second doctor was referred.
