Parents Demand Nursery CCTV After Tragic Loss
12 Feb
Summary
- Nine-month-old baby suffocated at a nursery in 2022.
- Parents advocate for mandatory CCTV to ensure child safety and justice.
- Government considers compulsory cameras following child abuse cases.

The parents of a nine-month-old baby girl, Genevieve Meehan, who died at the Tiny Toes nursery in Stockport in 2022, are advocating for mandatory CCTV in all early years settings. Genevieve suffocated after being left alone for 90 minutes. Her parents believe CCTV is crucial for keeping children safe and for obtaining justice, as the incident was recorded.
The government is now considering making security cameras compulsory in nurseries. This follows several child abuse cases, including one involving a nursery worker in north London who admitted to 56 charges. The baby's mother stated that the CCTV footage was essential for their family to achieve some form of justice during a difficult trial.
While the nursery's deputy manager was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 14 years imprisonment in May 2024, the parents emphasize that Genevieve's death should have been a catalyst for immediate change. The Minister for Early Education confirmed that the government is strengthening safeguarding measures, including enhanced Ofsted inspections and new guidance on CCTV through an expert panel.
