Nurse Struck Off for Dementia Resident Cake Remark
8 Sep
Summary
- Nurse Rossitsa Petkova was dismissed for misconduct.
- She claimed a dementia patient wouldn't notice their birthday.
- Petkova also shouted at residents, calling them 'shut up'.
A registered nurse, Rossitsa Petkova, has been removed from the profession after a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Panel found her guilty of misconduct. The ruling followed incidents that occurred between January and October 2023 at Castleford House Nursing Home in Chepstow.
Petkova faced eight proven allegations. These included a particularly insensitive comment that a resident with dementia would not be aware of their birthday, therefore did not require a cake. She was also found to have shouted at residents, telling them to 'shut up'.
The NMC Panel emphasized the vulnerability of the elderly residents at the care home. They concluded that Petkova's actions represented significant departures from the expected standards for a registered nurse and were fundamentally incompatible with her continued practice.
