A protest erupted among the paramedical and nursing staff of the Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology (RIC) on Monday. The demonstration occurred after a female nurse was allegedly assaulted by relatives of a patient. The protest was called off once a First Information Report (FIR) was registered. The FIR names three female members and additional male relatives of the patient's family. Charges include threats, physical assault against a woman, and insulting her modesty.
The in-charge nurse, Ms. Sitara Saleem, filed the complaint with Waris Khan police. She stated she was on duty in the RIC emergency ward when she asked three daughters of a patient to leave the area around 5 AM. According to her complaint, this request angered the women, who began shouting and verbally abusing her. Subsequently, she alleged they dragged her towards the male ward, where two men joined them and began to beat her. Ms. Saleem further alleged that her clothes were torn and an attempt was made to remove them. She reported continuous threats from the assailants, who identified themselves as wealthy individuals intending to cause her job loss.
