Families of those tragically killed and injured in the Nottingham attacks have expressed deep anger, stating that Nottinghamshire Police did not inform them about the violent history of an individual who attempted to visit them. This individual, Valdo Calocane, was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2020 and subsequently fatally stabbed three people, including Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, on 13 June 2023.
Dr. Sanjoy Kumar, Grace's father, and Emma Webber, Barnaby's mother, reported that the man had visited their respective GP surgery in London and travelled to Somerset, respectively. Neither family was informed of the man's past mental health issues or violent behavior. Nottinghamshire Police confirmed receipt of a complaint regarding withheld information and referred it to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
The IOPC confirmed it received a referral from Nottinghamshire Police concerning a complaint about information allegedly not shared with victims' families about a potential witness who had tried to contact them. Dr. Kumar stated that as recently as 2025, police provided minimal details, omitting any mention of risk or the individual's mental health history. He discovered later, through the IOPC, that the man had been on the Prevent register and had a history of being sectioned and violent offenses.
