In New Mexico, a father is accused of a horrific crime: burying his infant son alive. John Hannon, 43, allegedly buried his 11-month-old son, JJ, in a ditch after taking him for a walk in February.
He then misled the boy's mother, Krystal Phillips, by claiming JJ was with his grandmother in Colorado. Phillips reported the child missing when Hannon could not provide proof of his whereabouts.
Tragically, JJ was discovered on February 9, buried with a fractured skull and dirt in his airways, suggesting he was alive when buried. His stroller was found in a ditch, and his footprint near the burial site.
Hannon has a documented history of violence, including previous charges for domestic violence, aggravated battery, false imprisonment, and a misdemeanor DWI. The New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department had prior involvement with the family.
San Juan County Sheriff Shane Ferrari described the incident as deeply unsettling and a failure of the criminal justice system, vowing to relentlessly pursue justice for the child. Hannon faces charges of felony child abuse resulting in death and tampering with evidence.
