Young Nigerian's Dream of UK Life Becomes Organ Trafficking Nightmare

A Nigerian teenager, David Nwamini, traveled to the UK in February 2022 with dreams of a better life, only to become ensnared in an organ trafficking plot. He was led to believe he was traveling for medical tests related to a visa, but was instead coerced into donating a kidney.

His intended recipient was Sonia Ekweremadu, daughter of Nigerian Senator Ike Ekweremadu. The Senator and his wife, Beatrice, sought a kidney for Sonia, who was suffering from a rare kidney disease. They were connected with Obinna Obeta, who had previously received a kidney from David's friend, Friday.

David Nwamini testified that he was coached on what to say to medical professionals and that he did not want to donate his kidney. Despite his refusal to the consultant nephrologist, the Ekweremadus continued to seek a donor, eventually planning a transplant in Turkey.

In May 2022, David fled the Ekweremadu's residence and sought police protection. The Ekweremadus and Obeta were arrested. On February 23, 2023, Ike and Beatrice Ekweremadu were found guilty of organ trafficking. Ike received a sentence of nine years and eight months, and Beatrice was sentenced to four and a half years.

Obinna Obeta was convicted of organ trafficking and sentenced to 10 years. Sonia Ekweremadu was acquitted. This case represents the first successful organ trafficking conviction in the UK under the Modern Slavery Act, with ongoing concerns about similar unreported cases in Nigeria.
