Nigeria Busts Meth Lab, Arrests Mexican National

Nigeria's National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully shut down an industrial-scale methamphetamine laboratory in Ebonyi State. The operation led to the apprehension of a Mexican citizen, identified as Arturo Carrera Loaiza, at Lagos airport as he attempted to flee the country. This significant bust is the culmination of months of detailed investigation into a wider criminal network responsible for clandestine drug laboratories operating within Nigeria.

This marks the second time this year the NDLEA has dismantled a large-scale drug operation. Previously, in May, authorities apprehended members of a syndicate involved in drug manufacturing, which also included both Nigerian and Mexican nationals. The recent raid yielded substantial quantities of methamphetamine, processing equipment including three empty dehydrators, and hundreds of kilograms of precursor chemicals such as acetone, ethanol, chloride salt, and hydrochloric acid. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has noted West and Central Africa as a growing hub for illicit drug trafficking and manufacturing, attributing this trend to factors like porous borders and corruption.
