Nigeria Seizes Huge Meth Lab, Arrests Mexican Expert
24 Jun
Summary
- Huge methamphetamine factory found in Oyo State forest.
- Mexican meth expert and four Nigerians arrested at site.
- Drug barons target southwest for synthetic drug production.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully dismantled a large, multi-billion naira methamphetamine factory operating within a forest in Oyo State, southwest Nigeria. This clandestine laboratory was situated deep within the forest of Tapa Village, Ibarapa North Local Government Area.
During a raid conducted on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, NDLEA operatives apprehended five key cartel members. Among those arrested was a 56-year-old Mexican national identified as a methamphetamine synthesis expert, alongside four Nigerian accomplices who provided logistical and local support.
This significant bust follows a similar raid on a large meth lab in Ogun State just four weeks prior. NDLEA officials noted that this indicates a desperate attempt by drug barons to transform the southwest region into a hub for synthetic drug production, highlighting the cross-border nature of the threat.
The recovered laboratory was equipped with dangerous chemicals, industrial catalysts, and heavy-duty processing machinery. Samples of the crystalline substance found tested positive for methamphetamine and Phenylacetic acid, confirming the illegal operations.
