On May 25, 2022, a 23-year-old woman named Pooja died by suicide at her in-laws' home in Pithadai Society, Manda Dungar, Rajkot, India. Pooja's mother, Bhavna Kumarkhaniya, has filed a complaint against Pooja's husband Hitesh Jadav, his parents Dhanji and Geeta Jadav, and his sisters Aarti and Vaishali, alleging that they had been harassing Pooja for the past six months.
According to the police, Pooja had married Hitesh on February 5, 2022, and the couple had a one-year-old son. On the night of May 24, Hitesh returned late from his paan shop and went to sleep. Around 2:30 AM, when their infant son began crying, Hitesh allegedly found Pooja hanging from the ceiling, tied to a saree. She was declared dead by emergency services.
In her complaint, Bhavna stated that Pooja had been subjected to frequent harassment over petty issues for the past six months. Pooja had also left her matrimonial home nine months earlier and stayed with her parents for 20 days due to the harassment. The police have registered a case under sections 108, 54, and other provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
