Jack's Legacy: Saving K9 Lives with Advanced Body Armor
21 Dec
Summary
- A new K9 vest was developed to protect the neck and upper chest.
- The vest design was inspired by the sacrifice of K9 Jack in 2022.
- K9 units across Southern California provided feedback for the vest's refinement.

A groundbreaking tactical vest is now protecting K9 officers, developed in the wake of K9 Jack's fatal shooting three years ago. Jack, a Belgium Malinois with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, was killed in 2022 during an encounter with a barricaded suspect. His handler stated Jack's actions saved lives, despite the absence of protective gear.
Jon Becker, CEO of Aardvark Tactical, spearheaded the creation of a new vest line specifically for K9s, focusing on protecting the vulnerable neck and upper chest areas. The urgency intensified when Deputy Williams' new partner, K9 Kid, was shot in a similar region, surviving due to existing, albeit imperfect, protection.
Over a year of development involved input from approximately 30 K9 units, leading to a final design with a detachable ballistic collar. This vest, a tribute to Jack's legacy, is now being adopted, offering enhanced safety and honoring the service of these invaluable four-legged officers.
