NBA Star's Associate Jailed Over 'Rat Emoji' Threat

De'Niro Laster, accused of a scheme involving insider trading on sports bets with NBA player Terry Rozier, was jailed on Tuesday. Prosecutors contend Mr. Laster attempted to intimidate witnesses and obstruct justice by posting a rat emoji on Instagram. This symbol is commonly associated with informants, particularly in the context of organized crime.

Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall agreed with prosecutors, revoking Mr. Laster's bail due to the clear connotation of the emoji and his alleged pattern of intimidation. Mr. Laster had been free on bond since his indictment in October 2025.

The case involves allegations that Mr. Laster conspired with his friend, Terry Rozier, to bet on Mr. Rozier underperforming in a March 2023 game. Prosecutors claim they later met in North Carolina to count the winnings. Both men have pleaded not guilty.

Further accusations include Mr. Laster advising an unnamed co-defendant against cooperating with the government and attempting to obstruct justice prior to his indictment in September 2024. His lawyer argued the emoji was harmless, but the judge rejected this defense, citing precedent for harsher sentences in similar cases.
