In Navi Mumbai, an additional sessions court has sentenced a 56-year-old man to life imprisonment for a murder and robbery committed in April 2018. The conviction concludes an eight-year trial.
The accused, Sandeep Gupta, borrowed Rs 70,000 from the victim, Ram Prasad Gupta, and attempted to murder his wife, Lakshmi Devi, 53. Driven by a monetary dispute and demands for repayment, Sandeep fatally slit Ram Prasad's throat and stabbed him in the abdomen.
When Lakshmi Devi intervened, Sandeep also stabbed her and stole 90 grams of gold ornaments and Rs 80,000 cash. Despite severe injuries, Lakshmi Devi identified her husband's attacker, leading to Sandeep's arrest by NRI Coastal police.
The court relied on Lakshmi Devi's testimony as the prime eyewitness, alongside 16 other witnesses, to deliver the life sentence. The Rs 50,000 fine imposed on the convict will be given as compensation to the widow, and the recovered stolen items were ordered to be returned to her.
