Missing Grandma: No Border Evidence Yet
19 Feb
Summary
- No evidence suggests Nancy Guthrie crossed into Mexico.
- Border protocols activate automatically for disappearances near border.
- DNA found near home yielded no FBI database match.

Authorities are actively searching for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie in southern Arizona. While Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos stated there is currently no indication that Guthrie was transported across the U.S.-Mexico border, experts clarify the investigative procedures in such cases.
Retired FBI supervisory special agent Jason Pack explained that federal border protocols are activated automatically for disappearances occurring near the international boundary, regardless of initial evidence. Dedicated Border Liaison Agents and the FBI's Legal Attaché office in Mexico City maintain ongoing coordination with Mexican law enforcement.
Pack emphasized that while there is no evidence of cross-border movement, the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. He noted that border protocols require only geographic proximity and a missing person. DNA recovered from a glove found near Guthrie's residence and inside the home did not yield a match in the FBI database, according to the sheriff.
